PA Dept. of Education Academic Standards for history: 8.1.12 C: Evaluate historical interpretation of events. 8.4.12 A: Evaluate the significance of individuals and groups who made major political and cultural contributions to world history since 1450. Materials: textbooks, pens, pencils, computer w/ projector, students research regarding their character (gathered during previous class). Procedure: Intro/Motivation: Students will enter class prepared to begin the classroom version of the Nuremberg Trials. Each student is aware of their designated role, and any uncertainties or questions were answered during the previous class. The students will report to their designated areas of the classroom and remain standing. The accused file in first, followed by the four judges. The accused will make their pleas, and then opening statements begin. Developmental Activities: The prosecution will continue to question witnesses, and a select few of the accused. In doing this, they will submit evidence that they have gathered during their research. Midway through the trial, the prosecution will have the court view a Power Point depicting maps of the German Concentration Camps, and other various (appropriate) photos. (I will screen this Power Point prior to it being shown). Witnesses being questioned will answer according to research and knowledge gained through watching the movie Nuremberg. Closure: The prosecution will present its closing arguments. The four judges will then hand down their verdicts, according to the research they have gathered. Adaptations: If the allotted class time is insufficient to complete the trial, it will continue the following class day. Evaluation: Student: Students will be required to fill out an evaluation form regarding the mock trial. (attached) Teacher: I will read through the students evaluation forms to see how I can improve this lesson. Follow-up: The success of the mock trial will be discussed the following day in class.
