Organization: Whole group, Independent, Small group III. Objectives: At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to: Select valid sources to supplement their knowledge in the mock trial. Organize their data to assist them during the trial. Demonstrate their ability to conduct computer research. Rank the validity of their sources according to their individual content. IV. PA Dept. of Education Academic Standards for history: a. 8.1.12 C: Evaluate historical interpretation of events. b. 8.4.12 A: Evaluate the significance of individuals and groups who made major political and cultural contributions to world history since 1450. V. Materials: Textbook, pens, pencils, notebooks, laptops. IV. Procedure: a. Intro/Motivation: I will begin the lesson by informing students today we will prepare for the classroom mock trial of Nuremberg War Crimes Trial. First, each student will be randomly assigned a role from the list below: (see attached sheet) b. Developmental Activities: After students receive his or her role, I will divide them up according to the following groups: prosecution, defense, judges, and witnesses. Following this, each will group will begin to research their designated person. Their aim will be to gather research that they can use during the trial. The prosecution will also create a Power Point that they will use during the trial. This will be submitted as evidence. I will supervise the creation of this in order to ensure that only appropriate pictures, etc. are included. All students will conduct their research in the classroom using the schools mobile technology cart. Ample laptops are available so that each student will have their own. c. Closure: With 10 minutes left in the period, students will wrap up their research and laptops will be returned to the cart. I will answer any questions pertaining to tomorrows trial and clear up any uncertainties the students may have. Any student who wishes to stay after school to do further research is welcome to. I will be available for 1 hour after the end of the school day. VII. Adaptations: Students are allowed to stay after school for no longer than 1 hour to continue their research. VIII. Evaluation: a. Student: Students will fill out the attached sheet listing the sources that they used in gathering their research. b. Teacher: I will look through the research sheets to make sure that students were conducting research, and attempting to use valid resources. IX. Follow-up: Tomorrows trial will be used to gauge the level of research conducted by the students.
