Organization: Whole group, small group Objectives: At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to: Analyze famous speeches given during the Trial. Compare each speech assigned in class. Summarize the importance of these speeches in history. IV. PA Dept. of Education Academic Standards for history: a. 8.1.12 C: Evaluate historical interpretation of events. b. 8.4.12 A: Evaluate the significance of individuals and groups who made major political and cultural contributions to world history since 1450. V. Materials: Textbook, pens, pencils, notebook, laptops. VI. Procedure: a. Intro/Motivation: I begin class by telling the students that today we will be analyzing the famous speeches given during the Nuremberg Trials. The class will be broken up into 4 groups, and each group will be given a speech to analyze from the list below: 1. U.S. Chief Prosecutor Robert H. Jacksons Opening Speech 2. The American cross-examination of Hermann Goering 3. Albert Speer: Hitlers architect 4. U.S. Chief Prosecutor Robert H. Jacksons Closing Speech b. Developmental Activities: Each group will analyze their respective speech using their laptops. They will access the speeches at:  HYPERLINK "http://www.courttv.com/archive/casefiles/nuremberg/" http://www.courttv.com/archive/casefiles/nuremberg/ Afterwards, each group will report back to the class their findings. What was the main idea of the speech? What evidence did they cite? Etc. c. Closure: The remainder of class will be devoted to watching scenes from the movie Nuremberg. This movie will allow the class to prepare for the mock trial at the end of the week and also learn facts about the actual trial. Adaptations: Bobby, a student from 4th period, has Dyslexia. This poses a problem for him when he does research. I will pay special attention to him when he is working and will also have him stay with me during his lunch period to work further on the assignment. VIII. Evaluation: a. Student: Students analytical response to their assigned speech will be used as an evaluation. b. Teacher: I will analyze their responses, as stated above. IX. Follow-up: Students will type of their conclusions of their respective speeches for HW tonight. They will be turned in tomorrow for a HW grade.
